Marker Program

Village Improvement Society members Dorothy Mathes and Jean Semonite prepare to install the new historic marker on the 1906 Yarmouth Railroad Station building on Main Street. VIS is currently replacing missing or badly worn markers on previously documented historic homes.

VIS offers research service and house markers for qualifying historic homes in Yarmouth for a maximum cost of $250. A home should have been built prior to WWI and retain most of its exterior architectural features. View the PDF cover letter below for more information and instructions on how to apply.

In 1975 the Village Improvement Society received Portland Landmarks Award of Merit for completing a survey of all houses in Yarmouth built before 1900. A card catalog including a picture and description of each house was the end result and is maintained for reference purposes in the Yarmouth Historical Society Museum.
